The formula

tip = subtotal × tip_rate per_person = (bill + tip) ÷ people

When a sales tax percentage is supplied, the subtotal is recovered by dividing the bill by (1 + tax rate) rather than by subtracting the tax percentage from the total — those give different answers, and only the division is correct.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

In the US, 15–20% is standard for restaurant table service, with 20% now the common default in cities. Counter service, coffee and takeaway carry no strong expectation. Outside the US, norms differ sharply: much of Europe includes service and rounds up only, Japan does not tip at all, and in Australia and New Zealand tipping is genuinely optional.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Pre-tax is the traditional convention and is what the advanced option here calculates. The difference is small — on a $100 bill with 8% tax it is about $1.50 — so many people simply tip on the total for ease.

What if a service charge is already on the bill?

Then no additional tip is normally expected. Large groups are often charged an automatic gratuity of 18–20%, and it is worth checking the bill before adding more, since paying twice is common.
